Pot Magnets in General

Pot magnets make it possible to place ferrite magnet equipment quickly and easily in the right position. Thanks to its construction, this type of magnet has only one magnetic side. Not all sides are magnetic, put in another way. This type of construction prevents the magnetic field from expanding. The result is that machine parts or other parts of the equipment close to the pot magnet will not be magnetised.

Magnetic Fields and Power

The diagram shows power and direction o the magnetic field. It shows measurement values for the permanent magnet. By adding a steel plate, for example, or a U-profile the magnetic values will be increased. The depth of the steel elements, the volume of the magnets and the construction play a role in this connection.

Possibilities for Changes and Additions to the Construction.

The large selection of various models means that there will always be a suited pot magnet for your application. The following needs to be taken into consideration: High pot magnets which are produced out of rare materials in a sandwich form cannot be forced directly into iron. The special construction can cause magnetic short circuit. It means a clear decrease in magnetic power.

The tensile strength which is shown on the tables has been measured under perfect conditions. This can be obtained when the pot magnet is placed upright on smoothly polished surfaces of soft iron or steel with 37.5 mm thickness. The magnetic power will be reduced in case the surface of the pot magnet poles is dirty or if the surface is not sufficiently smooth. Table 3 shows diminishing magnetic power in case of air distance.

Clean pole surfaces and smooth working equipment is therefore good for optimal power of the pot magnet.
Pot magnets always keep their magnetic power. Only increase of temperature and external magnetic fields can reduce their magnetic power. The following tables show the possible reductions of magnetic power in different situations.

Please ask for our advice regarding the magnet if it has been exposed to varying power fields or high temperatures in periods. We would like to advice you concerning the installation of the magnets and about how to chose the right pot magnet. Or if the pot magnet needs a special surface treatment which is especially suited for chemical industry.

Figure 1

Different mixtures have influence on the magnetic power, due to the circulation/flow of the mixed material. The magnetic power is reduced relative to the carbon content in the mixed material. The larger content of carbon, the lower magnetic power.

Fiigure 2

The magnetic power is reduced, the larger the roughness of the surface.

Figure 3

The magnetic power is reduced depending on the air distance.
Non-magnetic material between the magnet and the subject has the same effect as air distance.

Alnico Pot Magnets

Alnico pot magnets are placed in a steel pot with a non-magnetised material (brass or aluminium) between them. These pot magnets can be used by temperatures of up to 450 degrees C. After this a reduction emerges of minimum 30 to 40% of the magnetic power.

But it is not permanent and the power will be re-established as soon as the pot magnet is cooled down to room temperature.

Chemical Pot Magnets

Chemical pot magnets are also equipped with a steel pot to protect the magnetic field. They need very little construction height and therefore have many structural advantages.
Ceramic pot magnets can be used at temperatures of up to 200 degrees C.
After this, the magnetic power is reduced by 30 to 40%.
But it is not permanent and the power will be re-established as soon as the pot magnet is cooled down to room temperature.

Samarium-Cobalt Pot Magnets

Despite the fact that the Samarium-Cobalt magnets have steel pot, there is no protection against radiation of magnetic power.

Therefore Samarium-Cobalt magnets cannot be constructed in steel without further consideration. A precondition for building in steel is that the distance the steel element and the pot magnet are between 1.5 and 6 mm, depending on the size of the pot magnet.

Samarium-Cobalt pot magnets can be used at temperatures up to 200 degrees C, and after then the magnetic power is reduced by 15-20% It will be re-established as soon as the temperature has decreased to room temperature again.

The magnetic power of the Samarium-Cobalt pot magnet is 5 times higher than that of a ceramic pot magnet. They are also more resistant to strong, varying fields. Samarium-Cobalt magnets are often used in spot welding machines and in very small machines, which demand a strong magnetic power.

The Samarium-Cobalt pot magnets can be recognised by their white colour on the magnetic side.

Neoflux Pot Magnets

Neoflux pot magnets are made by a mixture of neodymium, iron and boron. The magnetic power of Neoflux pot magnets is seven times higher than ceramic pot magnets, by room temperature. These magnets have a box of soft iron, which supplies them with a magnetic shield. To prevent rust, the magnetic side of the Neoflux magnet has a protection coating.

Neoflux cylindrical and flat pot magnets can be used at temperatures up to 80 degrees C. By higher temperatures than this, the magnetic power will decrease by 15-20%. It is not permanent, and it is re-established by normal room temperature. This Neoflux magnet may not under any circumstances be forced directly into iron. It leads to a short circuit, which reduces the magnetic power.
The table shows the distance between the iron wall, the lower edge and the contour.
This rule must be followed in order to obtain an optimal magnetic power.
The Neoflux pot magnets can be recognised by their blue colour on the magnetic side.

Adhesive Electro Magnets

Design and function of adhesive electro magnets are principally the same as pot magnets. The advantage of adhesive electro magnets is that they can be turned on. The magnet will attract the object when the magnet is turned on. When the magnet is turned off it will release the object. Adhesive electro magnets can be applied for the attraction of positioning of an object for a short period, or can be applied for the need of a strong magnet. The magnet has a weel on the backside which is used for mounting.

Individual and customised magnets.

Electrokul A/S is, with Goudsmit, a good partner for many different applications, thanks to various disciplines and well-educated, competent employees. This does not only apply to standard work, but also to many customised solutions. Elektrokul A/S and Goudsmit Magnetic Supplies can both design and deliver in accordance with the specific demands of the customer. The ideas of the customer will be worked through by the competent and well-educated professionals in a relevant system. Her we use state of the art CAD-CAM equipment (including a Flux3D simulation package) as well as an advanced management system for production.

Permanent Adhesive electro magnets.

The permanent adhesive electro magnet is known as a “Safety Magnet”. The magnet works in the opposite way of the adhesive electro magnet. The object stays in place when the magnet is turned off.
The permanent adhesive electro magnet is often used when longer adhesive periods are necessary, and when the magnet must be turned on for shorter periods or once in a while; as this is the case with equipment for transport and lifting.

Power Supply

A 24-volt DC electro magnet needs power! Electrokul A/S and Goudsmit Magnetic Supplies have two types on stock (maximum 23 Watt and maximum 70 Watt). Gousmit produces custom-made power systems for all Volts and power up to 150 A, with and without guarantee for failure of the power.

Ultra Flat Adhesive Electro Magnets

Ultra flat adhesive electro magnets can be turned on and off just like standard adhesive electro magnets. The magnet attracts ferrite magnetic articles when it is tuned on. It lets go of the object when it is turned off. The ultra thin adhesive electro magnet is primarily used for lifting and placing of thin steel plates. The flat design makes the magnet extraordinarily suited for places with little space.

Subjects to remember.
Everybody who works with magnetic material must read the following and do as recommended. There is a risk of serious damage if you are not careful when working with permanent magnets. Both the attracting and rejecting power can be dangerous.

  • The magnets must glide from one another so that fingers will not come between them. It will also damage on the surface of the Neoflux magnets.
  • Always use gloves when possible.
  • It is strongly recommended to use safety glasses and additional safety equipment when the magnets are processed.
  • Take care! Neoflux may never be processed in a setting with explosive danger, due to risk of sparks.
  • Always wet the magnets before and during processing to prevent spontaneous ignition. Therefore: Always use cooling water, never work without it by processing of the magnets!
  • Powder and other parts which are processed must be sealed hermetically after processing, in order to prevent spontaneous ignition.
  • Always unpack the magnets in a good distance from objects of iron.
  • The magnets must be kept in a good distance from objects which contain electronic information such as credit cards, tapes discs, and from electronic equipment such as hearing aid, pacemakers, instruments for monitoring and regulation, EDB machines and clocks which can be affected or damaged (permanently) because of the extreme and strong magnetic fields.

Radiation and Maximum Temperature for Use

  • Permanent pot magnets may not be exposed to radioactive and gamma radiation in longer periods, It reduces their magnetic power.
  • Maximum temperature for use is the following:

Effects on the Human Body

There are no known side effects of contact with magnetic material. Persons with allergy for ceramic or metal materials may experience a reaction being in contact with magnetic material.
